Know Your Vehicle’s Real Towing Capacity

Advertised max-tow numbers assume a stripped-down truck with no passengers or cargo. Your actual capacity is almost always lower once you add people, gear, and a hitch.

• Check your owner’s manual or door-jamb sticker for your exact GCWR and payload.

• Subtract passengers and cargo weight from your payload before adding tongue weight.

• Remember advertised max-tow numbers assume a stripped-down truck, not yours.

I find also that if I haven’t used my trailer for a while it’s best to check the lights, tires, and be sure you have a lock or clip to lock the hitch when hooked up.
